Luthien didn’t know if she’d remember one day, of her past, but she knew that she would remember of the kindness of the human who helped her when she needed the most. She couldn’t tell why other elves were reluctant about spending time with this race. There were a lot of interesting things she had found out about that was made by the human kind after all. This city was one of those said things. It amazed her and not only for its size. She knew that she, personally, felt more of a connection with the woods but the city brought so many commodities that were close and made it simpler to deal with. Miroesa had shown her a bit around the town when she wasn’t busy with her princess duties and she appreciated the time the young woman had for her.
Right now, however, was one of the times where she could savor some alone time and she didn’t mind. Walking around the citadel was nice and she liked walking outside of it, having a view on the rest of the town and the sun setting. It was very relaxing. She started wondering about if she’d ever remember as she stopped walking to gaze up at the sky.
Maybe someday… she thought, as she resumed walking as the wind blew gently into her hair. She just hoped that she wasn’t too much of a burden for Boromir and his family, considering that they had offered her to stay so openly.

Boromir would still keep a lot of the prejudices he had towards the elves. It was hard not to when they did so little to help them. The elves seemed to have abandoned humans in their despair. That being said, he could tell that Luthien was different. Maybe it was because she still couldn’t remember everything about her past or maybe it was simply that spending time with her around helped understanding her race better, but he had a different opinion about her. She was reliable and she proved a good friend to Miroesa, who had so little in this place. That didn’t change much what he thought of elves in general though.
He had been locked up most of the day in the tower, reading about the past and planning strategies for the future. He blinked as he exited and the sun hit his face. The Citadel was at the peak of the seventh tier. You had a clear view not only of the town but of the plains surrounding it and the White Mountains nearby. And there was Luthien. Alone. He couldn’t see his cousin. More surprisingly though was the fact that no guard kept watch of her. He knew his father didn’t trust an elf. Boromir sometimes felt the same and he considered the escort was not that bad of an idea. They could even justify it by the fact she didn’t know the city. And when she was with Miroesa, it was even more natural to have men watching, for their protection. So he was surprised not to see any. Maybe they decided to cut her some slack.
“Ran away from your escort?” he asked as he joined her. His eyes grew accustomed to the light and weren’t too hurt by the setting sun anymore. He sighed as he rested against the cold stones and watched the scenery below.

Luthien enjoyed being here, up in the sunshine of the citadel. Sure, it wasn’t like being in the woods but since it wasn’t safe for a young woman (despite the fact that she wasn’t so young and obviously could protect herself) she accepted the kindness of humans and agreed to take it easy. It’s not like she had anywhere to go since she couldn’t remember. She chose to embrace the moment, for now, which was her enjoying the view. It’s not like she expected to have company at this time, she grew used to the guards who were often around her and was surprised that they didn’t come around when she went out.
Have they decided to give her a moment of peace? If so, she appreciated it. She was slightly surprised when she heard Boromir’s familiar voice questioning her. “I was wondering about it myself as well.” She said. H eseemed like he had worked a lot. “Is something troubling you?” she dared asking. “You don’t need to share it with me if you don’t want to.” It’s not like it was of her business and he didn’t have to tell her if he didn’t want to.
She didn’t move from where she was, hence she came here for a moment of peace. She didn’t mind to leave him at peace too if that’s what he wanted.

Boromir understood why they didn’t let her go. If elves ever came knocking at their door, maybe his father would consider letting her go. Or if he wished to send a message to them. But since neither of these situations happened, she was stuck here. Because the mentality of men was better to keep someone hostage near you than risk said person stabbed you in the back later. Still, he was forced to admit that, for a hostage, she was pretty much free to go around. Some places were forbidden, of course, but only because someone like her wouldn’t be allowed in, even if she was a real guest of the court. Even Miroesa couldn’t wander at her leisure everywhere. It was best, for Boromir didn’t want to imagine what would happened if she suddenly walked in on a military council.
He wondered where Luthien was from. There were two forests where elves lived, and he knew there was also a city past the mountains. The latter was less likely but he could imagine her frustration over the fact she couldn’t even say. She had not fully recovered from her amnesia.
As an elf, he figured she could sense her escort better. They seemed to have better senses, or at least boast about those. He frowned as she sensed something was troubling him. Apparently, their eyes and ears were not the only enhanced senses of theirs, intuition was too. Or maybe it showed on his face more than he meant it to. “I have simply worked all day at the tower, reading old lore. My eyes are a little sore.” He stopped merely because the light was declining and he didn’t feel like going through scrolls under the candle light.
He looked at Luthien. She had not moved from her spot, keeping the distance between them. “What about you? You look pensive.”

Like Boromir, Luthien had questions. Being with humans wasn’t as bad as what she had heard from most elves. They weren’t all greedy, wasn’t she the proof that some of them were still kind and willing to help? She couldn’t remember where she came from, but she did remember a few things, more than she did before and she had to admit was that she wished to forget what she remembered. They might be an old race and one that should be respected but there were no points in hiding away from men when they weren’t a menace to you.
She tried not to think of it too much and focused on the man that was standing before her. He looked tired and she couldn’t blame him. A job like his wasn’t always the most restful job. She also slowly started to remember that she had learnt how to fight back then, and that it was why she could be quite a combatant. She started wondering about if they would let her train, despite the fact she was held here. She did train a bit with Boromir, but she wanted to see just how much she knew. “I would too, I prefer to be outside.” She admitted. She had a strong connection to nature and the environment, it was part of her nature from what she understood.
She nodded at his question. “I am, a lot of questions are running through my mind lately, despite what I’m starting to remember.” Was it too much to ask to remember? Unless what she had to remember wasn’t a good thing. She didn’t know, and here she was again starting to bug herself with all those questions.

Boromir had a lot of responsibilities. His people needed him, looked up to him, he could not disappoint. He was not complaining however, he would always do his duty, no matter how tired or weak he felt at the moment. But, in moments like this one, when his people couldn’t see him, he allowed himself not to be the strong man he really was inside and showed to them. There was Luthien, and maybe he shouldn’t let her see that side of his, but he was a bit too tired to really care at the moment.
He replied nothing as she admitted preferring the outdoors. For an elf, he supposed it had to be expected. Weren’t they living in forests in houses made inside the trees? It was what the old tales said. Boromir knew nothing of elves outside of that, Luthien being the first he really got to see up close. Well, she and her dead companions, but dead people tended not to be very talkative. Too bad this one had lost her memory, it made using her as an envoy for help not very likely.
He straightened up however when she claimed to have remember things. This could be good for them. “You’re starting to remember?” Hopefully, that would include his name that she would no longer forget right after being told again. Maybe she finally remembered it for good. “What kind of questions?”

Luthien appreciated Boromir’s company, he was a capable man and she could easily trusted him. Maybe it was due to her memory that hasn’t returned to her, or maybe it was because she mostly spent time with him but she appreciated his presence. He cared for his men and she knew that he was a hard worker. He never slacked on his duty and it was admirable. She knew that he would do anything to protect his men but it never came to her, for now, that he might keep her there for that same reason.
She glanced back at him as he questioned her. “I’ve started to remember things from my past, it’s a start, I figure.” She admitted. She also started to remember Boromir’s name, which was improvement but she had yet to remember the reason she came so close to the human lands.
“I also remember your name.” She added, with a small smile since she probably gave him headaches from asking him what it was.

Boromir could read any of his men. They were soldiers, just like him. He shared his sense of duty with them, calmed their fears and worries, gave them courage. The people of the court however... And women were even more enigmatic to him. So if you add the fact Luthien was also an elf, Boromir preferred not to even try and understand what she may be thinking. At least she was a warrior, proven by the trainings they had together. And the fact he found her on a battlefield. He could at least relate to that if he was in the dark about everything else.
“Like what? Do you remember where you’re from?” Mirkwood or Lorien, it had to be one of these two. Unless Elrond’s people came all the way down, but Boromir could not believe it. He thought it could be useful to know where she was from. At the same time, he doubted his father would send an envoy to tell them they had an amnesiac elf of theirs at their citadel. But maybe it could give them hope. If Luthien was a scout, maybe it meant they considered sending help at last. Boromir had to think of his people in this.
He had a little smile as she pointed out remembering his name. “That is an improvement,” he said, his voice sounding barely a little more amused than usual. At least he wouldn’t have to constantly remind her. This was getting a little insulting, even if, by now, he sort of got used to it. He could almost tell her on principle, assuming she did not remember, as it seemed to be the case always.

Luthien was frustrated by the fact she couldn’t remember much, like where she came from, which was the reason of her sigh when Boromir questioned her. She couldn’t blame him, for asking. She would like to know as well. At least, it would’ve helped her to go back to her home. “ That is something I still need to remember, unfortunately.” She admitted. ”I’ve had more questions about the relationships elves had with humans, I fail at understanding why they didn’t help humans.” She’d have questions to ask when she’d be home, either it was to be turned down or not.
She smiled at him too, when they joked about her not being able to remember his name. “It’s been embarrassing enough not to remember.” She admitted laughing lightly in the process. “It is, at least, it means that I’m improving.” Her smile grew wider and she focused back on the view and sighed contently. It was going to be a nice evening. She suddenly regretted not having a book to read while being up there. There was always another option. “Would you mind to have a walk with me?” She suggested after a few moments. Besides, he seemed like he could use one.

At the sound of her sigh, he figured he asked a little too much out of her. Why did he have the feeling that, had Miroesa been there, she would have slapped him or something? But Boromir couldn’t take his words back and merely waited for her answer. He frowned at her words. His face darkened, as it was a touchy subject for him, now more than ever. “Elves and humans have not fought alongside each other since the great war against Sauron. That was ages ago,” he added, in case she wouldn’t know what he was talking about. It was hard to tell what she may remember and what she had no clue about. “They slowly closed themselves in and let humans to themselves after this.” If there had been battle between men and elves, or the two armies fighting alongside, or any form of alliance of any kind, it didn’t go down to Gondor. Elves living mostly in the north, they had a river and mountains to cross to get south, it was no surprised they were not interested in going there.
Boromir wanted to fix his previous mistake by at least making things lighter about her memory loss regarding his name. “I don’t know, I think at this point I got used to introduce myself every time to you,” he replied. He had a small smile curling up his lips. She looked at the scenery and Boromir looked at her. He always heard that elves had better visions than men. How far could she see? Was she able to see the shores on the other side of the Anduin or was that asking too much?
His brows arched up at her question. He didn’t expect her to wish for his company. He was a little tired but he could use a walk. It would help his muscles that were tensed from the lack of activity, since he had been sitting at the tower all day. “Why not,” he answered.

Luthien frowned for a moment as she digested what Boromir was telling her. So they did collaborate in the past. She’d have to ask to her people what happened and why they decided to close themselves to the human race. They weren’t bad. Not from what she saw anyways. They wanted to protected their people and she understood that need. “I see.” She said. She didn’t elaborate on the subject, since Boromir wouldn’t know more than her about it. It was a question that she would have to ask for her people.
She had to restrain another laugh at his words when they joked about her memory loss. “You could always do that again, if you wish, since, old habits die hard.” She suggested playfully. People always seemed surprised to see an elf around and being around Boromir and Miroesa didn’t make her feel out of place, at least, not too much compared with the rest of the humans she didn’t get the chance to talk to.
She nodded at him as he agreed to join her and she started walking. He looked tired, and drained, but she couldn’t blame him if he had been stuck in the towers all day. “I figure work has been dreadful?” She asked him. She wouldn’t ask him the nature of his job, she could understand it was confidential.

He paused a moment, thinking about it. What he said seemed to have affected her. “I can ask my father, maybe he could let you study the old parchments at the tower. Or offer you some history book to learn more about this,” he suggested. Of course, it would be from the man’s point of view, so maybe it would paint her race in a bad light, but at least it would be something. And, who knows, maybe it would help her remember certain things, bring back the lessons she learned herself from that time long lost. Even if he knew elves could live for centuries, he doubted Luthien was old enough to have lived during that time. They were talking thousands of years after all.
This time, he chuckled for good. “Who knows, maybe I won’t be able to stop myself,” he added. More seriously, he was glad he wouldn’t have to remind her his name constantly. He more or less found her back there during the fight, yet she could remember the name of his cousin and some other people around the citadel but not his. He never would have thought he’d be this glad someone could remember his name. But this was a special situation.
He sighed at her question. “I’ve had worse,” he said, not giving more details. She was a warrior too, she had to understand what he meant by that. “It’s more that it made me feel helpless and that is worse than everything else.” Boromir could feel weak, he could be clueless, but he couldn’t accept feeling as though he no longer knew how to protect his people.

Luthien thought over Boromir’s suggestion and nodded. “Maybe I will, but I don’t want to be a burden.” She didn’t want to impose herself in their libraries but the idea of having access to dibs of history was appealing. She was interested into the history but she wouldn’t ask for access to a library if it was a privilege that most people didn’t have.
She smiled back at him as the atmosphere lightened up. “I am patient, I wouldn’t mind.” She didn’t see him laugh often and it was a good thing. She even caught herself thinking that he had a nice smile. They started walking and he admitted that he was feeling helpless. She didn’t think that he was, sure, there were things you couldn’t control but Boromir was a very capable man from what she had seen.
It seemed that she was reading through his mind and turned around to face him and looked at him in the eyes. “You are not helpless, you are a strong man. I can tell.” She stood there for a few moments before starting to walk again. She understood that protecting his people were his priority, he didn’t have his job for no reasons.

“It wouldn’t be a burden,” he assured her. At first he had thought of the archive but maybe even Miroesa had a book detailing this history. It was not like this was a big secret. If not as many people knew of this, it was because it was so old that it became the stuff of legend rather than true facts. “Miroesa might even have a book about this. It has become a myth, a tale you tell to children. On a lighter tone, of course,” he told her. A lot of details were brushed over in those tales, of course, because they were either kept quiet or were long lost. A story didn’t have to be the entire truth after all.
“We have a few scholars who can study our books and parchments, it couldn’t be hard to arrange it.” It was a bit of a lie but he preferred not to let her know just how suspicious his father was about her. The man had grown grimmer over the years. Boromir could understand, he was certain the same thing happened to him, but he was sometimes worried about his father. They needed to trust, or else that would mean they were alone in this fight. And Boromir had too much common sense not to know they would lose if that were the case.
He had a tired smile as she tried to... comfort him, he supposed. “Maybe, but who knows how many more years we can keep like this. We can fight for many more years, I’m sure, but I’m seeing my men getting killed without seeing any chance of this to end. I am their captain, I should be able to do more.” He was also the eldest son of their steward, the one who would take his father’s place one day. He had to prove he deserved this.

Luthien would take the offer then if it wouldn’t be too much of a big deal. She would enjoy spending a day in the library. She also considered going to Miroesa and ask her for books. She completely forgot that Miroesa could have a few. She could always ask to the princess later. “I think I will ask her for books then. It should keep me entertained.” She didn’t mean that she was bored. She just liked to keep her mind occupied since she couldn’t remember much.
She nodded at him but she didn’t want to pry for the library. She could content herself with the books that Miroesa would have for her. She bet that she would be happy to land her.
She tried to study him as he explained what seemed to weight on his shoulders. “I see, but I still believe that you are doing your job correctly. You might have higher expectations of yourself than your people.” She didn’t want him to overwork and she wasn’t entirely sure over the fact either or not he was pressuring himself more than what people wanted from him.
