Aldamir didn’t want to admit it, but lately, if he went s often as he used to, or perhaps a little more, to his spot not very far from the healing houses, it was not as much as to think and be quiet but to keep an eye on Laurë. His sister had been worried about all the weight she lost since she started to work, and the girl had never been heavy in the first place! He had no idea if what he said helped her in any way. But he did tell her not to let it eat her, that if it was too hard, perhaps she should consider another line of work. She could prepare the medicine for example.
Not that long ago, a bunch of soldiers returned, many of them wounded. He wanted to make sure she was coping with this as it sure would bring a lot of deaths she couldn’t prevent. Of course, he would never admit that. The girl was still getting on his nerves when she wanted to, but he found himself preferring her old obnoxious self to this depressive version. More calm, sure he was for it, but not if it meant changing her entire personality. Ever since she returned she had yet teased him about anything. Even Sorsha was wondering if something worse happened on her trip that she refused to tell her. She must have loved her guard a lot for acting like this. And she was too soft to be a healer, if every death her affecting her that much.
After staring at the view below him like he often did, he walked towards the healing house, passing through each beds with the soldiers on them, their families or healers at their side. Aldamir wanted to be among them, to fight for his country, for his people. he was even ready to give his life for them. He felt it would be better than what he was doing right now. He had been promoted captain, well it was not official yet but he was to be in charge of the guards in the market district. He had a feeling he was not given this title for his work but only because most of them were fighting and they were lacking of men for every position. He disliked it, as he always talked of valor and honor. He didn’t want a promotion if it was just because the ones above him were now soldiers.
He kept walking around, searching for Laurë in the crowd. As far as he knew she was still working here. Well, that if she had not made herself sick again otherwise she’d soon be the patient and not the doctor.

Laurë had been allowed to start working more regularly, but the other healers all agreed to have her work on the medicine and keep her in the back. For now, she wasn’t ready to see people dying, and considering her state, she was better off with people who would keep an eye on her if she was over doing things. She had to admit, it was doing her good. She used to cope with death before, back with her lover. She looked down as she thought about her lost one. She knew she shouldn’t remind herself of painful memories but she couldn’t help it. He was still in her head, his voice was still there, she could still feel his touch. She wasn’t in a state to go and heal people. They had warned her however, that they might need of her assistance to help the healers but she wouldn’t do the heavy work.
She prepared a few fresh towels, for the men to heal the soldiers, hopefully it would do fine. It was distracting, and actually different from what she used to do. She liked it. Of course, she would still go heal children but she wouldn’t go near the ones who were to die. She was keeping company to them, making them smile; it made her feel better.
She put the clean towels into a basket and started walking around where the busy people were healing the soldiers. She didn’t focus much on them and she handed the needed items to the professionals. It wasn’t what she had signed up for first, but for now, it was perfect. She didn’t have to focus on the suffering people, nor the ones that were around the healing house which was why she didn’t notice Aldamir in.

Aldamir didn’t find Laurë, no. He bumped on her. There were so many people today, healer treating the soldiers, their families who came to have news and hope they’d live... It was no surprise then that he failed to see her frail stature in the crowd. He had started to think he had been stupid to come all the way here. The two of them could barely stand each other half the time, what was he expecting in coming? She’d probably yell at him, say she was fed up of him watching over her, that he was a pain and that she wanted him, Sorsha and everyone else to leave her alone for a minute.
He was turning around, ready to leave and tell his sister if she was to ask that she had a lot of work which would probably keep her busy enough not to think about death. Besides, those men were soldiers, they knew they could die. If they were to pass, it would not be her fault but all the wounds they were suffering from. He was thinking that when he bumped into her as she was right behind him. She had towels in her hands. “Laurë.” he said though found himself in the incapacity to add anything after her name.
He suddenly realized he had no idea what he could be telling her. His presence here made no sense. He was not hurt and frankly he had nothing to say to her. He couldn’t just say he wanted to make sure she was holding on, or that his sister was worried about her. He muttered an apology and moved away from her path, letting her continue her work as he exited the healing house. He walked all the way to the cliff he liked to stand and think on, moving at a quick pace. He found himself so stupid for his reaction, both for coming here and for saying nothing when he met her. What was wrong with him! He took deep breaths, trying to calm himself and also to stop his mind from insulting himself about his behaviour.

Laurë kept on working, giving the towels to the healers who needed them. It wasn’t as exciting as she was normally doing but it was better than dealing with families. For now, she knew that she wouldn’t be able to do much, nor to help with them for the loss of her lover was still present in her mind and she doubted that she would get him out any time soon. She progressed though, and was more and more able to sleep than she had before. She even ate a few food, which was better than none all day. The pain wouldn’t leave soon but her physic was getting better.
She kept her focus onto the basket as well as trying not to bump into the people as they hurried and families arrived. She never was comfortable in large crowds but she grew used to this, at least, more than she was the first time she arrived in town. She sighed softly at the thought until she bumped into Aldamir. She blinked, surprised to see him there. She knew that he would often go to his spot to think, remembering it from last time, and she didn’t consider that as spying. If it was, she was clueless about it as she was most of the time focusing only on her job. She looked at him curiously, checking on him to make sure he wasn’t wounded or needed anything. All he said was her name and an apology and left… She stood there, staring at him for a few moments, curious about what it all meant. She continued giving the towels until she was given a break and decided to go to see him, wondering about if anything was wrong.
She discretely went to him but stood a meter away from him not to startle him. « Hey Aldamir, are you alright? » She asked him softly. « Did you need anything? »

Aldamir was lost in his thoughts. He had so many to get lost into. His parents would never want him to join the army. Oh, they would understand but claim it was not a good idea, that they didn’t want their son to go and get killed. They’d claim the guards were just as important and in case there was an invasion, he’d have his share of battle protecting the citadel. They would assure him he fully deserved his promotion. All of them. His parents, Rabryn, Sorsha, even Balder for sure. That boy would probably be scared to death at the thought his big brother might die on a battlefield. He had been quite shaken already with his wound to the head. But Aldamir came through this wound and he would survive any other given in battle for sure! Sorsha had grown from the obnoxious, nosy little sister to the overly maternal one ever since she became a mother. She too would not understand his decision. Then again, he sometimes wondered if Sorsha didn’t take him for her pigeon or something since he constantly had to go to places she didn’t want to go or at least not alone. He was here, keeping an eye on Laurë because she knew her brother loved a spot near the healing houses.
Laurë... she was also on his mind. He found himself wondering what she’d think of his decision. She used to do as she wanted, not caring what others thought. If there was still this girl somewhere underneath all the guilt and pain she’d understand his desire to prove himself, to choose his path. What was he thinking, what Laurë could think of him? She’d probably wish for him to go there and get killed by an orc because he was a stubborn, stupid and stuck-up brat.
He startled when he heard her voice. He didn’t hear anyone coming really, too busy thinking. He didn’t catch what she said at first then she asked if he needed anything. He had previously sat down and was now standing, staring at her. She kept a distance between them. It was the necessary distance for them not to fight, it would seem.
He looked at her, but he still had absolutely nothing to say to her. Did he need anything? No, not really. He looked at the healing house behind them, where the soldiers were being taken care of. “Just came to see if you were coping, with all those soldiers. Some must be injured badly. The price for defending us.” he said, looking at the building and not at her as his mind seemed even further away still and not there with them.

Laure was actually surprised by the lack of conversation that Aldamir had. Did she intimidate him? She ddn’t think so; he wasn’t afraid to tell her she was obnoxious and annoying and that she didn’t care about what others thought. However, what surprised her the most was when he questioned her about her well-being. She looked at him for a few moments, and then at the healing house as he spoke of soldiers. « I’m taking a break from healing, I’m assisting them instead, for now… » she told to Aldamir. She paused only to look at him who seemed to have something on his mind. What was it? She didn’t know. It wasn’t her place to ask about it anyways.
She pondered about his words, on soldiers. « Those soldiers were aware of the risks they were taking by going there, it was their decisions. On most cases, at least. » while with children being sick and dying…they didn’t know of it and were too young to suffer. At least, in Laure ‘s opinion. « Even if it’s a job not any man would want to take, it’s a honorable one, they fight to protect us…» She remembered what her ex lover had told her about vocation. He loved it and loved just as much to talk about it. She stopped herself however, thinking that he didn’t want to hear her on the subject. She was just his sister’s friend and she wasn’t any kind of therapist. However, she understood her beloved when he spoke of his country, with sparkles and passion in his eyes. People tended to be selfish about soldiers, not wanting them to die and all. But the feeling you had to do something important was nothing compared to all of this. She too wanted to do something important which was why she ended up being a healer. It also distracted her from the pain and sorrow she was still having from time to time.

Aldamir nodded when she explained what she was doing now. Not because it was worth nodding to but because he had no idea what else he could say or do in response. Ever since she returned things had been so awkward between the two of them. Not like they were better before, they were constantly bickering. But he was starting to prefer those old days to this uncomfortable situation they seemed to be in. It was ironic that he of all people knew probably as much about Laurë’s life as his sister who was her best friend. Quite ironic when they used to be closer to enemies in the past. But already before she left on her journey they had grown slightly closer, because he helped her when she came after her mother’s death. And then he let her breathe and relax a little when she passed out last time at the hospital, affected by those children’s deaths. Being with his sister would have been draining. She was full of good intentions but Laurë had not been in a state to talk. And her family would have worried. Aldamir was neutral, it was the only reason why it worked well. Still, it didn’t stop the situation to be awkward.
She seemed to take those men’s deaths better than it was the case with the kids. Then again, as she said it, they were soldiers, they knew death was possible. Death and wounds and pain and loss. Still, Aldamir couldn’t help but envy them. He used to be so proud of being a guard, like his ancestors. But Gondor no longer needed to be protected from the inside. The danger was out there. What was a guard good at if the menace was coming from a different country? Sure, he could stop women from fighting over the same article at the market and prevent drunkards fights and arrest thieves, but it was nothing. It was not protecting them. Being out there, sword in hand and fighting off the invader, that was protecting them. This promotion as captain was a farce. He didn’t deserve it. Aldamir even suspected his father to have played a part in giving him this title so that he would not join the army. He was too young to be a captain, he was not a leader of men.
Laurë spoke of the soldiers, how not everyone might one to be one, but that those who were protected the people of Gondor. Yes they were, and Aldamir wished to be among them. “Not all of those who want to take this job has it though.” he mumbled for himself, looking away. He had chosen his line of work to protect and serve the people here in the citadel. And now he felt like he was failing to his duty, that he was no longer filling it as well as he used to. Yet another reason why he shouldn’t be promoted... But like they’d listen!

Laurë had grown to respect soldiers and guards. She was respecting them before but not as much as now and that was mainly because of her lover who passed away in a war. The memories of the man still saddened her but she knew that she had to stay strong and to move on, not only for herself but for those who were worrying for her like her uncle or her best friend, Sorsha. She knew that the girl was dead worried about her right now and even though she wasn’t in the best mood to speak, she hoped that her friend was willing to let her take her time before actually speaking more in deeps about what happened.
She agreed with what he said however, that not everyone had enough courage to take the job of a soldier but it happened and you couldn’t do much about it. At least, she couldn’t. She nodded at his words, wondering about why he seemed to care about it so much until the idea hit her right in the face. “Do you intend to join the army? ” she asked him quietly. He didn’t have to tell her if he didn’t want to but seeing his interest into the job, she couldn’t help but wonder. He’d sure have an entire family to convince. She knew that they cared a lot for each other and she thought that they were all lucky for the matters. She too had a close family but lately, it seemed she was losing all of her loved ones so it restrained her from going into deeper emotions with anyone.
She could understand his needs to protect the town; he didn’t seem to be as proud of his job as he was back then but even if she wasn’t going to admit it aloud, she was starting to worry for him. He had changed ever since he had had his wound.

It was a dream he had not shared with anyone yet. But Aldamir was feeling useless lately. He was seeing those men leaving, ready to fight and even die for their country. He had the same kind of devotion for his home and wished he could express it. But he knew he could not. His parents would panic and rant and go against him if he even tried to. It was annoying. For what use was he here? He didn’t even deserve this promotion as captain of the guard. They only gave it to him because they knew family always served as guard for many generations and because he was more serious than his brother Rabryn. But he couldn’t see it as a well-deserved promotion. Maybe others were older, more experimented than he was. But most of them were joining the army or were used to protect the citadel and the steward instead. They had their own promotion in a way. One Aldamir would have preferred having instead of this one. And to think his parents wanted to celebrate it. He was not in the mood for that.
He was a little surprised she heard him but she asked if he wanted to join the army. He slowly lifted his gaze to meet hers. Could he say it to her before his family? Her, the annoying little Laurë, the woman who since the day she arrived made it quite clear he was an annoying stuck up she would torment? “Yes. he said on a clam voice tone. There, he said it. Apparently, he could. Then again, he cared about her opinion a lot less. She was not family, even if she was against, she could do or say little to convince him.
He sighed, looking away. “I’m certain my sister told you of this nonsense about me becoming a guard captain. It’s a joke.” he said bitterly. What were they really thinking to give him this position? Were they thinking it would be enough to convince him not to join the army?

It was odd to know that for once, Laure understood Aldamir for his need to prove himself. Doing something you didn’t even enjoy much wasn’t what she had wanted for life, at all. Maybe it was selfish but she always thought that it was best to love your job than doing something you hated every day. Sure, Aldamir’s wellbeing had never been part of her priority but she could understand him on that part and she thought that he deserved her support even if a deep part of her didn’t want him to be in the army –she went through enough loss already and who would she have to annoy if he was to die?
« I say go for it then, become a solder if that’s what you really want. » she added. She couldn’t tell him to stay home, it wasn’t of her business and she knew pretty well that’s not what she would have done if she was the one who wanted to join the army. She would have joined it, even if people told her not to. She always followed her own convictions and never asked for other’s opinions.
She nodded when he talked about Sorsha. She seemed happy that he had become a guard captain but seeing Aldamir’s reaction; it clearly prooved that he wasn’t happy with the situation at all. Sorsha wasn’t the one who would actually do the job, Aldamir was. It was as if she was forced to go in a different direction than healing because people thought it was best for her. After all of what she had done, she felt useful for once being a healer and she wouldn’t let anyone ruin that dream of hers.

Aldamir was actually expecting her to think it was a stupid idea to wish to join the army. He was doing a similar job at protecting the people of Minas Tirith being a guard and that without putting his life on the line like he would fighting orcs and goblins. He knew in a way it was true but when he was seeing all those soldiers, some of them he knew personally, he had the feeling they were doing all they could while Aldamir was simply cowardly doing a guard job. His father would probably tell him to get higher in his profession, to work closer to the steward and his sons, to take care of them inside the city walls. But that too didn’t seem like enough, not when younger men were giving their life for his. He felt he owed them. He was still young, he was able to fight and he had no condition or reason not to. He should be there with them.
Since he was certain she’d share everyone’s thought on the matter, he was quite surprised when she said he should do it. He should do what he wanted. Did she really just say that? Laurë, thinking like him? For a second, he wondered where the catch was. She couldn’t seriously want him to do what his heart desired. She never cared much about his heart, or any part of his body. He looked at her with a light frown, not sure how to react to this. “And then you can tell me how stupid my idea was when I’ll need you to heal my wounds?” he said, trying to find what she would tell him once he’ll agree with her. She loved to annoy him so he couldn’t believe it was all she had to say.
“How come you’re the only one who thinks that? I know you don’t care about me but still, I doubt you want me to get killed in battle. Or sadden Sorsha.” he added after a moment. He was still trying to understand, or perhaps simply get used to the fact the girl who annoyed him the most was the only one to be on his side right now. Did that mean it was a terrible idea?

Laure blinked as she stared back at Aldamir who seemed not to believe what she had just told him. What was up with this? Couldn’t she be nice once? She didn’t see the reasons of why she should tell him no while she was doing things the way she wanted to do them. He should do the same. It would prove that he could wear the pants. If that’s what he really wanted in life, she was convinced that he should do it, even if it wasn’t pleasing her and no matter how selfish it sounded. Sure, there were things in life you couldn’t just do it that way but she thought that since it his job, he was in right to decide of it no? She didn’t tell it to Sorsha though mainly because she might take it the wrong way and she didn’t want to cause friction in their friendship.
When he told her that she would tell him how stupid it was in the Healing houses, she couldn’t help but laugh. « Maybe, depending on how badly wounded you come back. » she said but it was mostly said in a playful manner. Odd to think that she was actually joking around with him while before, it was the last thing she saw herself do with him.
She shrugged at his other question. Maybe it was because she was raised differently? She had no ideas. Or maybe it was because she was used to have little things to herself and whenever she had them, she did all she could to keep them? « I don’t want anyone to get killed but it’s your job not mine, I can’t tell you what to do or not. » she added matter of factly.

When he heard her laugh, he couldn’t help but to chuckle a bit with her. It was strange, since they rarely had a good time together. They hated each other’s guts usually when they were seeing each other. But apparently they could get along at times too, how odd was it! He could still recall their first encounter and how much she annoyed him while he was trying to do simply his job. He remembered all the things she called him and how she acted when Sorsha first invited her to their home and she found out he was living there. He still found it odd she didn’t comment on the fact he used to be engaged and it was called off. When she found out, he was certain she’d say things like that it was no surprise she walked away, with how he was and everything. If she did, his sister never mentioned it. And she never said it to his face, not ever. He wondered if she did not soften during her travelling.
He questioned her and she said it was his life and not hers, she had no right to tell him what to do. He sank in his seat, crossing his arms, a light smirk playing on his lips. “If I recall correctly, you had no problem telling me what to do before.” he told her though there was no reproach in his tone. There might even be... teasing? “At least you don’t want me to get killed. I’m happy to see if you don’t have a high opinion of me at least you don’t wish my death.” he said, his smirk now growing slightly bigger as the teasing was now more obvious. He filled his cup with the jug of water on their table and drank from it, still eyeing her doing so.

A smile formed onto her lips as he reminded her how much she liked to talk back to him. That was the thing, what would she do if he was to be dead? She’d live a lonely life without anyone to torment. Sure, there was always Keann but it wasn’t fun anymore to torment him. He was just too shy and it was getting old. Besides, she felt bad for Arien who would have to force herself on Keann if she ever needed to…reproduce. She looked at him as he pointed out she did not wish his death. « Exactly; if you die, who would I have to give orders too if you die? » She added. Maybe Aldamir was helping her remain sane even though they got on each other’s nerves half of the time.
« Besides, I will find it more satisfactory to tell you ‘I told you so’ when you really deserve it. » she said lightly. Funny how they were joking on things they would usually argue about. Not that she minded, it was a nice break, well taken. « See? You’re not always boring. When you want. » she added nudging him slightly as they were sitting one to another before he took his cup to drink water.

Even though he knew she was only jesting right now, and that it was a good sight to see her smiling again after days of depression, Aldamir felt a light frown appearing on his facial traits. It might only be jesting but he knew she did enjoy tormenting him and the fact she could joke so easily about how boring he was or how fun nagging him could be was, well, a little hurtful. It was the reason why he said nothing as she nudged him, deep in his thoughts. Not like he thought they were friends, she was his sister’s friend not his, but he did believe they were past the point of annoying each other constantly. Maybe not.
He sighed. He was even more silent when upset. Not that he’d like to show her that but he supposed it couldn’t be helped. Oh well, she didn’t know him as much as his family, maybe she would not see the difference. He was boring after all. “And when am I not boring, exactly?” he asked after a moment. Perhaps she’ll take it as a joke, a way to continue on what they were talking about. Although right now he was hoping he had not come to the healing houses in the first place. He wouldn’t have to hear this and get it stuck in his head.
