Aldamir raised his head from his book when he heard a knock at his door. He frowned, pondering about who it might be. Perhaps Sorsha wanted to tell him they were leaving or something of the kind. But in the same time, he knew his sister wasn’t knocking that way when she wanted to ask him something. He was only half surprised then when he heard Laurë’s voice calling him out. He watched her opening his door very softly while asking how he was doing.
He wasn’t dumb, he knew she knew for his attack. Just the way she acted when getting in the house proved it. If she had not been warned, she would have asked questions over his new look and she would have been concerned with the large scar on his left temple. But she didn’t say a thing and even tried not to look at it, the proof Sorsha mentioned it in one of her letters. Not that he was really surprised, even though he didn’t appreciate his sister talked of his life with Laurë, he couldn’t just avoid it, especially when something that big happened. She sure wasn’t detailing his life in her letters - even though he didn’t like the comments on Ellandhra - but this affected everyone in the house to the same level of his father’s injury or Balder leaving to study.
“You can come in.” he said as he noticed she was not moving from the door frame. He replaced the book on his night table. The room was rather nude, not very decorated. There were two beds. At first, he slept with Rabryn and when Balder needed a bed, with him while his older brother got a room of his own. Most of Balder’s possessions were gone but you could still find some toys and a chess board on his side of the room. On Aldamir’s side, there was nothing much except for a drawer with his clothes inside, the necessary to comb his hair and shave his beard on top of it with a mirror and a chair with his sword and guard attire on it. He never needed more nor felt the need to put more life in it. It was just a room where he slept after all.

Laurë nodded as he allowed her to come in, knowing that Sorsha was worrying about her brother might just give her the right subject to talk about to him. She slowly entered, holding her bag in the process for it was having the necessary medicine in case he was in pain. She looked at him, studying how he had become since the last time he was, physically he had changed and mentally as well, he seemed more closed up indeed but for now, she would try to have a little chat with him.
“Are you feeling any pain still?” She asked him being in healer mode. She couldn’t help it, after her mentor took her under her wing, she simply took the job at heart and it had now became the meaning of her life; if she was having a screwed up life, it didn’t mean that other people couldn’t have a piece of happiness if she managed to help to keep the people they care about to remain alive. She should have seen it with Deonvan, for, her mother had been lost, and she didn’t know what was going with her father. Her mother always told her that she had given her the name of her father and an elfin one, so whenever he’d feel like wanting to find her, he would get to her but it never happened. Everyone she cared about ended up dead, but that wouldn’t stop her from preventing other people having the same faith as hers.
She returned her attention back him, waiting for him to respond to her as she placed her bag on the ground next to her.

Aldamir was a bit surprised she decided to play the doctor with him. And inside, a little pissed as well. He didn’t think it was her place to come here and heal him. Plus, he had his head fixed already. He didn’t need another one worrying about him, especially not her. They had too complicated a relationship for him to simply let her come and start taking care of him. And why did she care about him in the first place!? She was his sister’s friend, not his. He was the ‘annoying, stuck up, arrogant guard who couldn’t relax’ to quote her. And even if she came in Sorsha’s stead, he didn’t need her no matter if it came from a good intention or not.
He stood up and went to his drawer. What annoyed him was not the question, it was legitimate after knowing what happened to him. It was the tone. She was all of a sudden talking to him like a healer, like someone important inquiring an answer when all the words she ever gave to him before were said on her usual brat tone. Yes, in the end, it was the professional attitude that bugged him. Not that he couldn’t believe her to act like a professional, but he could go without. She was not her healer, if she had the right to learn anything about his health it was as an acquaintance and nothing else.
“I am fine, and you can tell that to my sister as well.” he replied after a moment, restraining himself to tell her to mind her own business. “Drop the attitude on me, I don’t need another healer looking at my head.” he told her however before looking away through the window, going to it and resting against the frame, the temple where the scar was in evidence for her to see as he gaze outside.

Laurë frowned as he stopped her, he hadn’t changed one bit; there she was, playing nice while he was remaining the same old self, actually, maybe he had grown bitterer than how he used to be. She was ready to start off newly with him, but if he wanted to play that way... she sighed running a hand through her curly hair before looking at him. Maybe it was the time to settle things with him. “Look, I’m sorry for what I called you three years ago, I was still young and lost, but you’ll have to drop that attitude, not only on me but on others, it affects Sorsha to see you like that.” She told him, maybe he would not like, but at least she was apologizing, something that probably wouldn’t come through Aldamir’s mind at the moment.
“I’m ready to start off a new friendship with you.” She paused, thinking he might assume that it was because of his newly wound. “And it’s not because of what happened to your head.” She finished, satisfied with what she said, perhaps he would understand now that she had came with good intentions, that she didn’t mean to come and talk nuts to him. Maybe Deonvan had been the one who changed her like that, softened her tough attitude, who knows. But for now, she wanted to have a few words off with Aldamir.

He stared back at her as she apologized for her attitude all those years ago. She placed it on the count that she was young and lost. He could give agree with that. She was young and obnoxious, thinking she was right while the older ones were only there to spoil her fun. In a way, she had been acting a lot like his sister, but he let Sorsha do a lot more on him than he let Laurë. Family always had an advantage. He stiffened some as she mentioned his sister being affected by his attitude and all that was happening to him. The girl always had a very maternal reaction towards her brother, taking over their own mother on many aspects. He looked back through the window, not liking to hear his sister might worry for him like that. She had her own family to take care of, he could watch over himself on his own. She should really focus on her newborn son instead of fearing what might happen to him.
He returned his gaze on her when she started talking again. She wanted to try for the two of them to be friends. He could tell it had nothing to do with his injury, there didn’t seem to have that much pity in her eyes. “I have no problem into talking to you.” he finally said after a moment of reflection. “But I don’t need another doctor getting over my head and telling me what’s good for me. They already checked, I’m fine, there’s no need to go back on that.” he felt like warning her though. She did seemed to have changed quite a bit but he had no intention in being her first patient here in the city.

Laurë watched him after she spoke to him, well, at least he seemed to consider what she was telling him, which was a good start right? As a grown up teenager, she was willing to settle things with him so Sorsha wouldn’t worry about their fights and this, even if they happened to be fun and entertained her in the past. Her change of conscience had only happened when she started healing others, seeing that some children were having worse situations than hers, thus having her to open her own eyes, she would have to have a little chat with Jossian, Keann and Arien when it’ll be the time, to thank them for what they have all done for her so far and also, to thank Keann for the lovely gifts he gave to her. Deonvan used to be impressed by him, and one day, told her that he’d get her something from her cousin, but now it was too late. She frowned at the thought and shook her head before he looked back at her.
She smiled, satisfied that he would agree to try and start a new kind of friendship with her, even if she was wondering about if their previous relationship could be counted as some sort of friendship. It was more annoyance she presumed. Her smile grew wider at his comment about her nursing him. “But if you faint on me, don’t think I’ll leave you there.” She simply objected. She guessed she could let him be for now, until he showed any signs of pain and whatnot. He assured her that he was fine and for now she would trust his words over the matter.
She knew that emotionally he wouldn’t be in a number one top shape, but for now, she wouldn’t ask him anything of the sort, they were personal matters and even she would have a hard time to talk about Deonvan since she was still mourning him, remembering his words and his death as she was attempting her best to nurse him to keep him alive.
She slowly walked closer to him to sat down onto his bed, so they could have a proper chat. “How are you feeling?” she simply asked him, he didn’t answer to her question previously. “And I’m not asking that as a healer.” She assured him.

She finally got a smile out of his, from the corner of his lips, at her comment on healing him should he faint. He lowered his head, a silent chuckle escaping his lips along the way. “I have no intention to faint on anybody, don’t worry.” he replied before walking back to his bed, the only thing he could sit on since his guard attire was on the chair. He noticed her light up as she said that. He could almost see the old Laurë back there. Just like his sister, who had grown a lot more mature now that she was married, she kept her careless spirit somewhere in to bring it out when the situation called for it. As long as she was more careful than his sister who still tended to be a little reckless. He didn’t believe liked her husband that she’d need to be accompanied on the market, she was used to it and was quite good at bargaining. But she could watch herself, and perhaps keep a bit of the weight she took while she was pregnant. She was too skinny for her own good, that made her an easy target.
“I’m taking it a lot better than Sorsha if that’s what you want to know.” he answered her question. He moved his head to stare at her. Not because he wanted to talk face to face literally, but because she sat on the side where she could see clearly his scars and he wasn’t fully used to them yet. At least the one on his temple would be hard to see once his hair grows back. And his family assured him the cut on his ear wasn’t all that apparent. He wasn’t so sure about it but then again, he knew it was there and so kept seeing it every time he watched himself in a mirror.
“Or perhaps you wonder if I’m fine over Ellandhra.” he added, his eyes narrowing as he insinuated it. He knew his sister talked of her in her letters, and Laurë gave her opinion as well. If he could accept to have his sister worry and talk over his health, he didn’t appreciate the comments on his love life. Or his past love life for that matter.

Laurë smiled and nodded, glad that she had managed to pull out a smile onto his face ; thus actually being the first time they were able to stand such a conversation. Making the first steps over such a matter was rather great; it only proved that she had grown up, not only to others but to her as well. She had calmed down over the years, she knew it, she wasn’t as feisty as she used to, healing had done well on her that’s for sure-but that didn’t mean she would allow anyone to point out the fact into her face and rub it on her.
She glanced at him and nodded as he assured her that he was taking it better than Sorsha did his head for the matter. She knew he ought to be strong- even if he was sometimes, a stuck up one and always had problems to relax. But just like how she wouldn’t have anyone to rub it in her face, she would contain herself from pointing it out until he would do something that would force her to tell him, to shake him up so he could actually realize what he was doing and that would only poison his life.
She frowned a bit as he talked about Ellandhra, she didn’t mean to talk about her and soon looked away, to fix at his guard attire, thus horribly reminding her Deonvan’s, she looked down at her feet. “Those are personal matters.” She said with a tight throat; why everything was reminding her of him? She needed a distraction; and as soon as she would find her cousin, she would get one if she was to be hired into the healing house he talked to her about.

He saw her look down when he pointed out she’d probably want to know how his heart felt as well as his head. She maintained it was personal matters, which meant she would not start asking about that. She seemed somewhat sad and he noticed she looked at his uniform. It probably reminded her of her guard even if he doubted the guards in Lebennin had the White Tree like in Minas Tirith. It was the symbol of the personal guards of the King, or in this case the steward. He never heard it was worn anywhere else except in the citadel. But a guard uniform was a guard uniform and he could see how it reminded her of him. He didn’t even get his name, it escaped his mind when Sorsha talked of it. Not that he ever cared anyway about her lover.
“Funny, you’re about the first who tells me that. And you would have been the first to talk of it before.” he pointed out, his gaze lost in space in front of him. She did let out comments about how he’d never find someone to love him in the past. Back then, if she had heard anything about a woman and him, he knew he wouldn’t have stopped hearing from it every time she was to eat with them as a quality of friend of Sorsha.
It was weird to Aldamir that, of all the people who knew him, she was the first not mentioning her to him. They all wanted to know how he was handling it, if he had seen her since, how it affected him that she was wearing his gift or that she went to see him at the hospital. They didn’t get that he didn’t want to hear of it. It was hard enough to live it already.

Laurë blinked at Aldamir’s comment, it was true that before, she would have been the first to try and meddle in and to bring up the subject, but she figured out that Sorsha was doing a great job out of this, all by herself. A playful smirk appeared onto her lips as he pointed that out, glad that she would forget about Deonvan for a bit. She turned her head up to look at him, slightly amused of his remark. “Don’t you think Sorsha is doing a good job by herself?” She questioned playfully. She knew that with his sister he wouldn’t be offended, at least, not as much as if it was to be with a stranger she presumed.
She returned her gaze down and grasped the skirt of her dress as she waited for a reply to her come back. Sure, she had proposed to start on a new way their friendships, but hey, that didn’t mean she wouldn’t stop teasing him from time to time. She understood him however, how he wouldn’t want to talk about his loss, she didn’t want to talk much about hers either, it was hard enough already to hold her tears back, she didn’t want to break out in front of him, not now, she needed more time alone first before doing that in front of others if they weren’t to be family, then again, she wasn’t even sure about how she would react to see what was left of hers back.

As she smirked back at him, Aldamir thought finding back the Laurë who left three years ago, the one who annoyed him more than anyone else. Sure she could be tolerable at times. He had been really sorry for her when she came back to Minas Tirith after the death of her mother. And he believed he helped her a bit by giving her time to regain composure before talking to anyone who’d start asking questions to her, such as his sister. Yes, he was a serious man but he liked his life this way. He didn’t feel the need to go to taverns with the guys, he didn’t like brothels. To him, relaxing meant having a good conversation, reading a book or playing a game of chess. It didn’t make him any different than people, he just found his pleasure elsewhere than material need and carnal desires.
He had a tiny smile and a soft chuckle as he lowered his head at her remark. Yes, his sister was getting her nose into his thing enough for one man to endure. It even caused some frictions between Ellandhra and him. She wasn’t used to that and hated to be judged and looked at by this young brat. Aldamir knew her well though, it was his sister. As annoying as her meddling could be at times, it always came from the best of intentions and so never got mad at her, unlike his fiancée. “I think it isn’t becase she left the house that I need someone to take her place. On that matter or any other.” he replied, guessing she’d understand. He had only one sister and she could do a lot before he’d start getting irritated by it, but it wasn’t the case for strangers. They were not family.
“I suppose I should thank you for not staring at it. I haven’t seen a single person sitting next to me without staring at my scars. It’s as if I’m reduced to it now. Can’t even work like I used to thanks to that. I’m operational, I can do my job, I don’t need to be on this light duty.” he said, a complaint in his voice. He hated being reduced to the simplest of chores because he stood up too fast the day after and fainted. Even in training, the other guards were being softer on him and it enraged him. He would have preferred everyone just got over it. He was fine, sure he had a few migraines but he already had less of them, and they weren’t as strong anymore. He couldn’t stand inactivity.

Laurë smiled at Aldamir statement. Sometimes, she envied them to be so close, to have a sibling to worry about them. What did she have? Nothing and sure she had a cousin, but it wasn’t the same thing as having a brother or a sister but life decided to give her a different path, a different one than many other living human. She frowned at the thought for a few seconds until he thanked her for not staring at his scar, oh if only what she had seen, if only he knew what happened to some of these kids. Some losing their limbs, some had worse scars that were even more apparent. She gave him a small smile and a nod.
“I have seen worse, to say the least.” She told him with a sigh as she remembered of the kid who had died. Great, if she didn’t think about the dead of her beloved, she thought about the dead of that one kid she didn’t manage to save. However, it gave her an idea; maybe she should drag him to visit the kids some day, so he could truly know what she was talking about.
“Can you train? Maybe you should find yourself another hobby to kill the time meanwhile.” She suggested. Sure being on light duty could be annoying-even she couldn’t imagine how it would be not to be able to work as much as she did at any hospital.
“You could come and visit the hospital with me tomorrow; I’ll probably work there eventually.” She told him while they were at it, they could give a visit to the kids since she was having free time and when she would fill up the required paper, she would be a full time healer.

Aldamir nodded as she assured him she had seen worse than his light scar. “Tell that to my family.” he replied. He knew he was lucky and had very little damage when you considered the soldiers coming back from Osgiliath or anywhere else almost dead from their wounds. Some were marked for life, they had scars everywhere, they lost limbs. He only almost lost a piece of ear. There really wasn’t enough there to be this protective. Besides, with his job, now that he was most likely to become captain of the guards some day, they all had to be ready for him to be injured. A good thing he didn’t tell them he considered joining the army and help his city fight off the orcs at their border, what would they be thinking?
“Now you sound like everyone else!” he exclaimed when she said he should find a hobby. “I’m not invalid, I can do all the things I did before.” he said, hoping at least one person would understand and believe him here, even if he never expected that person to be Laurë. They never really got along. But perhaps someone as hard to keep in one place, a bit like his sister, would be most likely the one to understand he didn’t want to stay in his corner. Maybe she didn’t fully get the reason why he refused any special treatment though. He wanted promotions for his skills, not because they figure he couldn’t watch the streets anymore and so he should watch the guards instead.
He raised an eyebrow out of surprise when she said he should accompany her to the healing houses. “You could never stand me even just walking you to your cousin’s house and now you want me to give you a tour to the healing houses? Are you sure you’re Laurë?” he asked out, a bit of amusement piercing through the surprise and disbelief here. He never figured she’d voluntarily spend time with him. She really changed!

It was true that with the kind of job she was doing, Laurë was one to see, on an everyday basis people with injuries that were worse than Aldamir. She also knew that unless you have worked into this field, you could never truly understand how worse some people’s states could be than yours. However, she arched an eyebrow as he stated he wasn’t invalid. She understood him in a way, that she would go crazy if she was stuck to go on light duty because she almost lost an ear. It wasn’t as if she almost lost an arm or anything. Besides, from what she was seeing, he didn’t even lose it and seeing how he was doing, it didn’t seem as painful as it appeared to be.
“Then you’ll have to prove yourself in front of the others.” She simply stated with a shrug. Surely he could do that; if there was one person on this planet whom she knew that they’d advance in their career with or without a pair of legs, it was probably Aldamir because of the seriousness of his personality.
A playful smirk appeared onto her lips at his comment. “As long as the change isn’t a bad thing.” She pointed out laughing lightly. “But I don’t think Sorsha would stand being into a hospital, especially if she was to see injure kids like I’ve seen every day, as a mother, she probably couldn’t bare it.” She pointed out.

When she explained it was better him than his sister he couldn’t agree more. Sorsha had a maternal instinct sine a long time and it grew bigger now that she really was a mother. She never really stood the sight of blood - kind of ironic than her choice in a husband. Then again, she knew it wasn’t because he cut himself and so he figured it was easier for her to bear. But still, he’d wish to have her avoid seeing kids sick or dying. He saw her pale and worried enough when he went there. She continuously asked if he was alright as his head was in bandages and even started by talking louder because of his ears. But he assured her the hearing was fine she didn’t have to do that.
He grew serious at her comment and nodded, understanding her choice and agreeing. He could still bring her there. Not like he’d have to stay anyway, she was a big girl, surely she could find her way to her cousin’s house afterwards... Scratch that, if his sister even found out he brought her to the hospital and didn’t walk her back home, he’d be dead. Oh well, guess he’d have to walk her around. “You’re right on that, I’d prefer her not to see this. She never stood the sight of blood and seeing kids in that state, now that she has one of her own, would only make her freak out for her Theodoric. You just have to tell me when you want to do that.” he said to her before a small smirk appeared on his lips as he looked through the window. “But maybe not today, I doubt Sorsha would love me to interfere with whatever she planned for you. I bet she wanted you to see Jenssen and her house. Let’s give her this pleasure.” he added. He wondered where Sorsha was. A good thing she had her baby, otherwise he would have expected her to be at the door eavesdropping.
